Sharon Presley has written and spoken extensively on obedience and resistance to authority.
Dr. Presley received her Ph.D. in social psychology from the City University of New York Graduate Center where her mentor was Stanley Milgram, author of the classic study, Obedience to Authority. She recently retired from teaching psychology and critical thinking classes at California State University, East Bay in Hayward. Her specialties include obedience and resistance to authority, and gender issues, as well as social influence, individual differences, and forensic psychology. She is working on a sequel to the current book that will be specifically addressed to issues of women and authority.
She is the founder and Executive Director of Resources for Independent Thinking (www.rit.org), a nonprofit educational organization, providing resources and articles about independent and critical thinking. She is the co-editor of Exquisite Rebel, an anthology of 19th century libertarian/anarchist feminist and resister to authority Voltairine de Cleyre, published by SUNY Press. She is currently working on an anthology of 19th century American women resisters to authority. She is also beginning a book with anthropologist Dr. Susan Love Brown, titled Is Gender in Our Genes? This book, intended for a popular audience, will examine biology, psychology and anthropology research to show the complex origins of gender-related behavior.
